Stephen Ojiambo Wandera
• Senior Lecturer specializing in Gerontology and Demography at Makerere University
• Member, Technical Advisory Group (TAG) of the WHO UN ‘Decade of Healthy Aging (2022-2025)’Stephen Ojiambo Wandera, PhD, focuses his research on vulnerable populations in Uganda: older persons, children, and families. Among the aging population, he examines inequalities in health and healthcare access for older persons in Uganda, while also exploring social determinants of health for older persons across sub-Saharan Africa.
His recent work includes a 2021 scoping review of "Cognitive Stimulation Therapy for older people with Dementia in Africa" and leadership of Uganda's first survey on ageism against older persons (2018-2019), which sparked diverse policy dialogues. As a CARTA re-entry grantee (2017-2018), he investigated the "Determinants of HIV Testing among older persons in Uganda." His PhD research (2012-2016) examined "Disparities in health and access to healthcare among older persons in Uganda."
Regarding women and children, Stephen has investigated violence against these populations and parent-child communication about sexual and reproductive health. Moving forward, he aims to use experimental and intervention research designs to address the health needs of older persons in Africa, investigate violence against men and boys, and design interventions for addressing violence against women and children through experimental studies.
